COMPANY HISTORY

Stephen L. Powell, President of the company, began Powell Steel Corporation and incorporated the company on July 21, 1993. The first job undertaken was the erection of steel at the Conowingo Dam in Conowingo, Maryland. The first major job undertaken at it’s present facility, beginning on October 6, 1994, was the in-house fabrication and erection of the Living Learning Center at Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania. The determination was made at the outset to take great care in every facet of the job in order to have a quality result because this was the showpiece for future orders. Quality was the result along with sufficient new business to allow the company to grow quickly.

Two major contracts followed which helped provide a real foundation for the business, namely; the in-house fabrication and erection of the R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company Readers Digest Expansion Structural Steel Bid Package #08 which is located at their Lancaster East Manufacturing Division in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Also, the in-house fabrication and erection of the School District of Lancaster Contract No. 5, Structural Steel Construction for the new McCaskey East 9-10 Building in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Much credit is given to R.R. Donnelly & Sons Company and the School District of Lancaster for the success of Powell Steel Corporation and the encouragement to our company to grow and expand in the steel fabrication and erection business.

Powell Steel Corporation started with eight employees and in its first year of operation had gross revenues of two million dollars. At the turn of the millenium we now have in excess of eighty employees and gross revenues in excess of twenty million dollars.

While basically serving an area of approximately one hundred square miles, Powell Steel Corporation has provided fabricated steel and erection for customers in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Ohio and New York.
